Owing to a gale of a rare violence, the Urugayen tanker Juan A. L,avalZeja (132.000 tons DWT) loaded with 57.000 tons of crude-condensat, grounded in the harbour of Arzew (Algeria) on the 28 th December 1980.

This paper sets out the different technical operations -methods used for unloading the cargo, blowing up the tanks with inert gas in order to refloat the casualty, towing the vessel from Arzew to Marseilles on an inert gas cushion, gas-freeing her in Marseilles before entering into a dry-dock at La Ciotat for extensive repaire. It gives also a summary of the law questions raised on the re-delivery of the vessel to the owners
