During the past decade, the container shipping industry ordered vessels specialized in containers transportation always larger. Their size grows from 5000 TEU* to 14000 TEU nowadays. The main reason for this increase was to follow the quick increase of the trade exchange worldwide. Moreover, bigger containerships are also beneficial in this time of global crisis because they allow an economy of scale and are more efficient. The structural properties of the containerships combined with their increasing dimensions caused the structure to have low natural frequencies, which approach the higher wave frequencies. This effect is expected to reduce the vessel’s fatigue life. A 9400 TEU containership has been instrumented to measure fatigue load cycle in situ and compare it to theory, numerical results and design limits. The method and main results are presented within this document.
