Reduction of the ship propulsion power
Stéphane CORDIER, STX France SA

Symposium on the marine pollution regulations until 2012
Combustion gas emissions generated by the machinery contribute to a great extent to the pollution generated by ships. As a large part of this power is dedicated to propulsion, and since the cost of oil has reached extremely high levels in mid-2008, propulsion power reduction, whatever the source of energy used to generate it, is a major axis in the development of “clean” ships at STX France.
The topics investigated to reduce propulsive power are gathered in two categories. First, the potential gains which can be expected from applying the current state of the art are reminded: - Choice of hull form parameters and speed for optimisation - Drag reduction through bow and stern designs - Choice of propeller running parameters
Second, new concepts are presented: Frictional drag reduction through air injection - Optimisation of the integration of innovative propulsors - Developpement of a system allowing large sails to be deployed to assist ship propulsion.
