The present development of ASVs (autonomous surface vehicles) is mainly driven by navy applications, especially for littoral warfare and anti-terrorism missions. ASV technology is also developed for oceanographic survey in two directions:
a) Powered ASVs are studied for more than ten years. In spite of their rather limited endurance, their use is expected to expend in complement with conventional ocean platforms of observation
b)Wind-driven ASVs denominated ASBs (autonomous sailing boats) have been considered more recently for long range surveillance or oceanographic survey.
After a literature survey on oceanographic ASV and ASB, the paper describes the ASAROME project of an autonomous oceanographic sailing boat capable to perform series of measurement runs over a long period of time at sea.
