In the French and European commercial fishing sector, the improvement of occupational health and safety on board vessels is identified by the EC as a major challenge. However, the European fish resources protection policies result in provisions that put restrictions to the construction of new fishing boats, and reduce the working space available on board, with detrimental effects on the fishermen’s safety. Starting from this contradiction, IMP carried out a study about the interactions between space available on board and occupational accidentology. This study shows that, nowadays, the fishing fleet renewal rate is not sufficient for owners to implement state-of-the-art technologies on their vessels design. It also demonstrates that some constraints imposed by the fish resource management system, the relevance of which is questionable, may negatively affect, in terms of occupational safety, the characteristics and layout of new fishing vessels.
