From 6500 TEU to 11400 TEU for a same concept: to what limit it will be possible to go?

Ludovic GERARD, CMA CGM, Directeur Constructions Neuves – Paris (France)

To give an answer to the world economy general growth and to the quick increase of the trade exchange worldwide, the shipping industry has developed larger and larger container vessels.

In 2001, 6,500 Teu* class container vessels were introduced, fitted with a single main engine of about 93,000 horse power. Later on, the design was developed to 8,500 Teu Class, 9,400 Teu, 9700 Teu and recently reached 11,400 Teu, all those vessels being fitted with the same single propulsion engine. Larger vessels of 13,000 Teu and above, with similar service speed, would be based on a rather different design. Those vessels’ designs have been developed by Korean shipyards, in cooperation with the major classification societies and shipping companies.

We will see throughout this presentation how similar and different all those vessels are. In this regard, we will review various fields and challenges of those large container ships : brief economical datas, main particulars, speed versus hull lines and propulsion, structural aspects, container lashing system.
