Since its apparition in 18th century, the history of hydrodynamics sciences shows that both theoretical and experimental approaches have always benefited from each other. At the end of the 20th century, the ever increasingly power hardware leads to more and more use of Computational Fluid Dynamics codes that takes into account more efficiently the non linear aspects of the hydrodynamics. Bassin d’essais des carènes had always been worried to investigate the relevance of those numerical codes with regard to the capacity to give proper answers to the questions asked by the naval architects and their complementarities with the experimental tests.
This paper presents, according to the different fields of interest of the naval architect (hull form optimisation, ship powering, propulsor expertise, seakeeping performances and safety, ship manoeuvring capacities), the expertise tools developed by Bassin d’essais des carènes which strongly combine the use of experimental testing and numerical calculations.
