Composite material interests for military ship design

Cécile DENOGENS, DCNS – Coque Structures Bretagne – Lorient (France)

The aim of this report is to highlight opportunities offer by composite materials in the design of ships and more particularly the superstructures. The international illustrations such as the American destroyer Zumwalt or the Swedish corvettes of the Visby Class are the reflection of this increasing interest for composite materials in the military naval sector. The development of the electronic warfare leads to the integration of equipments always more numerous and heavier, particularly in the high parts of ships. Consequently the search for gain of mass and the improvement of the stealth and the electromagnetic compatibility are problems at the heart of the current developments and for which composite materials can bring solutions. Composite are constituted by an assembly of tailor-made components to meet specifications. They offer consequently an extremely vast field of investigations which few illustrations are exposed in this report.
