The rogue wave phenomenon is known from many years and has been the subject of a seminar in 2000, the results of which were presented at the ATMA in 2001. In 2004 a new seminar has been organized to check the works and progresses made during the four years between them. This paper presents a synthesis of the papers presented at this seminar in the areas of observed waves and marine structure damages, numerical and in model basin simulation, improvement of the safety of the units at sea, forecasting of rogue wave occurrence. In spite of the obtained and reported progresses, it has to be noted that it remains a lot to be done to allow a good management of the phenomenon in design by naval architects and by sailors or offshore operators to safely operate ships and units at sea.
