The knowledge of the maximal load-carrying capacity of a ship structure is required to evaluate the safety of this structure within the early design stage. To do so, a first assessment of the ultimate bending of a hull-girder is needed. So, various simplified methods have been developed with different levels of approximation. Some of them will be presented hereafter. Then, two naval ships have been treated with full non-linear finite element method in order to get reference values. For these two ships ultimate longitudinal bending strength have been assessed by different methods based on progressive collapse analysis and compared to the reference results.
