The high waves generated by fast ferries may have detrimental effects when approaching the coast. The aim of the study is to determine the risks associated to the physical phenomena of "ship wash". The waves generated by high speed ships are represented by the free wave spectrum. This spectrum is numerically determined by a wave resistance programme (POTFLO) based on the Neumann Kelvin model.
The spatial wave propagation is modelled in time domain using a third generation spectral wave model named as TOMAWAC based on finite element technique. The time evolution at some critical positions along the shore is depicted. Results are given in terms of significant wave heights and mean wave periods for different routes and ship speeds.
