Wingsails: From high performance to auxiliary propulsion plant onboard ships

Based on its experience in designing wingsails for Class America racing catamarans, VPLP design introduces a new wingsail concept that is lowerable, reefable and entierely automated. The general approach, together with the developements and theoretical performances are presented. A fully functionnal instrumented prototype of 8m wingspan has been built thanks to the support of the French governement. the results of seatrial measures are presented, commented and compared to numerical models. Finally, these models are used to simulate achievable energy savings for a commercial ship fitted with such a device.
