Structural integrity management of oil offshore jacket type platform by an approach based on risk assessment
Francis GUEDE, Bureau Veritas, Marine & Offshore Division (Paris La Défense - France)
This paper presents a method for assessing the risks of structural damage and developing the inspection plan as part of the structural integrity management of offshore jacket platforms. The method provides an assessment of the risk of collapse of the structure, which permits the definition of inspection frequencies and general inspection requirements. It also provides a classification of the structural components of the platform according to their respective level of risk of rupture, which makes it possible, if necessary, to define the structural elements to be inspected. The probability of failure of the structure is estimated using an approach which consists in allocating a score to overall structural performance indicators. This approach has already been used by many other oil companies and it has been recognized that it allows for the development of effective inspection strategies. The consequence of the failure of the structure is estimated according to criteria on the possibility of loss of human life and on the environmental and economic impact. An example of application of the method is presented showing the results of a project realized by Bureau Veritas.
