Upgrading Charpy V tests by evaluating the cristallinity ratio of the broken samples
Marc BOUSSEAU - Consultant (CESMAN) – Nantes (France)
Julien BEAUDET - Naval Group – CESMAN – Bouguenais (France)
In order to avoid catastrophic failures observed on the Liberty Ships during the World War II, G. M. Boyd imposed in 1957 for hull steels:
- a Charpy energy KV greater than 47 J at 0 °C,
- a maximum cristallinity of 70% at this temperature.
Only the imposition of a KV minimum value at a given temperature has been retained.
European programs SINTAP and FITNET enable great progress in the field of the evaluation of the fracture toughness. Indeed this is necessary to evaluate the fracture assessment of welded structures. The Charpy test results, the Shear Fracture Appearance (SFA) at temperature in the transition zone and yield strength are key data to build the full transition curve in this approach. Then, TK27J is deducted and helps to determine the TK100MPa√m temperature and finally the fracture toughness transition curve (master curve).
