Physics in oceanology :

Gilles CHATRY, Ifremer - Archives et Patrimoine Intellectuel - Plouzané (France)

Oceanology integrates ocean physics and physical sciences. Like space, the ocean is an extreme environment, and its study requires theoretical and practical knowledge in fields such as acoustics, mechanics, electronics and optics.

The use of large equipments is necessary such as penetrometers in geosciences, testing tanks to validate structures, hyperbaric chambers for resistance to high pressures and sensors for the measurement of geodesic, geotechnical and physico-chemical parameters.

Increasingly efficient instrumentation is necessary to carry out marine research. Mechanical tests of tension, strain, stress, hardness and watertightness tests are done on parts and structures.
