Coatings of water ballasts tanks of LNG tankers
Y. OLLIVIER, CHANTIERS DE L'A TLANTIQUE, Saint-Nazaire
The efficiency of the protection against seawater corrosion of the sea water Ballast Tanks of ships and in particular of LNG Tankers (but also of the new type of double hull VLCC) is now known as a key factor which determines their life span.
The Yard's experience of these last 15 years gives a better acknowledgment of the parameters which determine a successful protection : dry film thickness, stripe coats, surveys and good condition during the application work.
This paper shows how these fundamental parameters are "built" by the two traditional techniques of the treatment of water ballast~ tanks used by the shipyards i.e. at the prefabrication stage on panels or blocks, or in situ after the ship erection.
The advantages and drawbacks about schedules and quality of these 2 techniques are brought out.
Las~ of all, the choice of the Chantiers de l'Atlantique for LNG Tankers is described : specification, air conditioning, surface preparation and paint application process are detailed.
