Every fishing vessel is at the same time a place to work and live in this including maintenance of different services and a means of transport. At observing fishermen on board, one realizes that many problems are originated by the gap existing between activity as imagined by the designers and working activity as it actually goes on. At that stage the ergonomist thanks to suitable methods and a good knowledge of the fishermen's working conditions is able to propose a valuable accompaniment of the project development, with view of the probable future activity of fishermen, as main focus. We shall present here the different steps of this method, aiming at the prevention of the difficulties shipyards, owners and crew have to face when the launch a new boat. Many examples -observed during journeys at sea by members of the laboratory -are given in this text.
