Comfort and savings on passengers ships owing ta resilient mounting of medium speed engine for propulsion

B. FILLOUX, S.E.M. T. Pielstick -Etablissement de Saint-Nazaire

Today, propulsion of passengers ships (car ferries and cruise liners) is done by medium speed diesel engines. Passengers comfort requires low structure borne and airborne noises; in order to succeeded, propulsion engines have to be resiliently mounted.

Although resilient mounting is very common for high speed diesel engines for instance for Navy purposes, ii remains quite seldom for medium speed diesel engines, heavier and running around 300 to 500 r.p.m. Such installations have been achieved on several passengers ships with SE MT Pielstick medium speed engines outweighing 200 metric tons. They allow a wide speed range and consequently a lower propeller speed which increases the efficiency and reduces the generated noise.

The design of resilient mounting of medium speed engines has to take into consideration:

-the flexible coupling of the engine,

-the flexible links of the connections (exhaust gas, luboil, water. fuel),

-easy maintenance of resilient pads.
