Unfurling of a sheet from a lifting surface leading edge -airplane wing or propeller blade

R. LEGENDRE, Ingénieur Général de l'Armement,Membre de 1'Academle des Sciences, Vice-président de 1'A TMA

The unfurling vortex sheet from a lifting surface leading edge was first observed when looking at the flow through a marine propeller model. The effect of centrifugal force being imperfectly convincing, it was searched for and found, much later, that the phenomenon exists for airplane delta wing models. More generally an unfurling appears normally for any lifting surface and is costly in power loss. It may be avoided by a convenient lift distribution. Consequences for marine propellers are then commented, specially for the cavitations.
