Use of titanium and titanium alloys in marine environment, future prospects
D.GEORGEAULT, Attaché aux Services Techniques des Armées, Ingénieur Civil au Service Technique des Constructions et Armes Navales ( STCAN)
There are two fields of titanium's uses in sea water environment :
-applications calling for a good sea water corrosion resistance,
-applications calling for a high strength to weight coefficient.
The high corrosion resistance of titanium against the different kinds of corrosion occurring in sea water environment establishes titanium as the most reliable material to first kind's uses.
In the second case, from the two mainly used alloys, the first one is susceptible to stress corrosion cracking (Ti-6Al-4V), the second one is almost abandoned as a result of elaboration problems (1'i-6Al-2Nb-1Ta-1Mo).
Works actually in progress for remedy to this fact, consist of development of new alloys, improvement of industrial alloys or full caracterization of experimental alloys.
