Alsthom Establishment de Nantes ACB have for the past year been undertaking a major applied research programme in the l1omain of naval hydrodynamics. This programme primarily concerns the development of a better and deeper understanding of the intricacies o-f flows around marine bodies and in particular marine proposes; the optimisation of propeuer design being the final objective of the programme.
In this paper we present the numerical method used for studying three-dimensional unsteady flows of perfect incompressible fuids past lifting surfaces. The method is an extension of the vortex particle method developed by C.REHBACH. The lifting surfaces are modelled by a superficial distribution of normal doublets, the vortex sheets are modelled by a number of vortex carrying particles. The time and space evolutions of these point vortices are studied by numerical simulation.
Some calculation examples for a flat plate under various bolder conditions and for a typical propeuer are presented at the end of this paper.
