Designing against fatigue needs usually three components :
1. service loads described by deterministic or statistic laws
2. the structure behaviour regarding these loads
3. the criterion for acceptability defining the structure security.
Nowadays, some methods are available and used by Designers. However, many assumptions are not justified and ignored. Actual research is mainly concentrated on the second and third points.
This paper denotes difficulties may arise while application of different existing methods. It reminds important assumptions and their consequences.
Using test results some different methods are compared and their degree of accuracy shown.
Finally, the paper discusses the possibilities to improve damage calculation methods using physical approach and new statistical tools.
