Hp vessel with a defect burst pressure calculation/test comparison

The burst of a High Pressure Vessel (HPV) containing a semi-elliptical sharp slit machined on the surface has been calculated as part of a round-robin organized within the CCRS Rupture, using different software's based on the concept of Failure Assessment Diagram. In a first time the fracture toughness was evaluated from Charpy V notch impact tests, obtained in the 80s, using the method recommended in FITNET.
After the hydraulic burst test, tensile, Charpy V and Compact Tension specimens have been taken in the broken flask for tests. The characteristics thus determined allows the recalculation. The new results are not very different from one program to another and the pressures thus determined are substantially below the burst pressure determined experimentally.
