Gm-meter, automatic instrument for continuous measurement of ship's stability

After having reviewed previous studies, this paper describes the measurement principle : Determination of GM through measurement of ship's natural roll-period by means of a spectral analysis of motion and calculation of virtual radius of gyration in relation with draft.

Then, the practical application of this principle is developed to realise a microprocessor automatic instrument, particularly filtering and adjustments necessitated by fluctuations of motion and perturbations when ship is moored at quay or sailing in very rough sees.

The philosophy of utilisation on board in regard with stability rules is finally studied.
