A joint study on the wind-assisted ship propulsion, ordered by the Ministère de la Mer, has been undertaken by IRCN, the French Shipyards, the Compagnie Générale Maritime and the Bassin d'Essais des Carènes de Paris. The aim of this study is fuel economy for a vessel fitted with her classical propulsive machinery and an auxiliary sail rigging.
The present paper describes a method for estimating the functioning characteristics and the economics of the wind-assisted ship, conceived for this study.
The method takes aero- and hydrodynamic factors into account and establishes the economic balance on passages made by the ship. Some application examples are presented.
