One of the main problems inherent to deepwater oil and gas exploitation involves the laying and connecting of flow lines linking the wells to the subsea manifold.
In deep water, human intervention is excluded. Hence, a fully automatic or remote controlled system had to be devised.
Within an association comprising the ELF AQUITAINE Group, the TOTAL-CFP Group and the FRENCH PETROLEUM INSTITUTE, ELF AQUITAINE as project manager completed the laying and automatic connection of a 1lowline bundle between one wellhead and one manifold installed in the Mediterranean sea at 250 m water depth. This realisation was performed without divers and guidelines from a dynamic positioning drill ship (PELICAN). All operations were controlled from the surface, using various systems 1or remote control, monitoring, and data recording : hydraulics, acoustics, television, gyrocompass etc. This Success is a world record at these depths and opens one of the gates to oil and gas production in deep seas of 1000 m and more.
