Nowadays, ocean rogue waves are a subject of major interest in multiple fields of physics. In the present article we propose to investigate the underlying mechanisms of rogue wave formation in the context of guided propagation of light in optical fibers. We report the recent studies of optical rogue waves in order to show how optics can provide new physical insights in hydrodynamics. In particular, the significant impact of the distinct concepts of rational solitons and wave turbulence in optics are confirmed.
