Maël LE GARREC, Bureau Veritas – Division Marine

Due to global warming the arctic summer season has become warmer and longer, and this trend is expected to continue in the future. As a consequence maritime activities can be significantly extended in arctic areas. But this extent is not riskless since many operators, owners and designers are not used to deal with the specific requirements involved when navigating in ice and in cold areas. That is why Bureau Veritas has set up an extensive research and development program, dealing with specific issued rose by the navigation and exploitation in arctic areas. This program is first meant to provide owners, designers and operators a better understanding of climatic and physical conditions, as well as local legislations in these areas, in order to select the most suitable level of requirements. It is also important to amend the existing regulations and to check that they are applicable to new designs and larger ships.
